Finding the right physician for an older adult

As health needs grow more complex with age, having a physician who understands geriatric care makes a meaningful difference. The right doctor does more than treat illness — they coordinate care across specialists, manage multiple medications, monitor for age-related changes, and communicate clearly with both the patient and their family.

Types of physicians who serve seniors

  • Primary care physicians (PCPs) — General practitioners, family medicine doctors, and internists who provide routine checkups, manage chronic conditions, and coordinate referrals.
  • Geriatricians — Physicians with specialized training in the care of older adults, particularly those with complex, multiple conditions. Often involved when care becomes complicated.
  • Nurse practitioners and physician assistants — Advanced practice providers who deliver primary care in many settings, including homes, assisted living communities, and nursing facilities.
  • House call physicians — Doctors who visit patients at home or in residential care settings, removing the barrier of transportation for those with limited mobility.

What to look for in a physician

  • Experience working with older adults and chronic conditions
  • Willingness to communicate with family members or caregivers
  • Participation in Medicare and any supplemental insurance plans
  • Availability for timely appointments and after-hours questions
  • Familiarity with the senior's care community or preferred hospital

Coordinating care across providers

Many seniors see multiple specialists in addition to their primary care physician. A good PCP or geriatrician acts as the hub of this network — reviewing medication lists for interactions, communicating test results across providers, and ensuring that care plans don't conflict. If coordination feels fragmented, a geriatric care manager can also help fill this role.

Medicare and physician services

Medicare Part B covers most outpatient physician visits, preventive screenings, and diagnostic tests. An annual wellness visit is covered at no cost to the patient and is a good opportunity to review current health, update medications, and screen for cognitive changes. Confirm that your physician accepts Medicare assignment before scheduling.
