Transportation Services

Transportation options for seniors, including non-emergency medical transport

Getting around when driving is no longer an option

Loss of driving privileges is one of the most significant transitions for older adults — affecting independence, access to healthcare, social engagement, and quality of life. Fortunately, Michigan seniors have a range of transportation options available, from community programs to specialized medical transport.

Types of senior transportation services

  • Non-emergency medical transport (NEMT) — Door-to-door service to and from medical appointments for seniors who cannot use standard transit. Often covered by Medicaid and some Medicare Advantage plans.
  • Senior center shuttles — Many local senior centers and Area Agencies on Aging operate scheduled shuttle services for appointments, grocery runs, and social activities.
  • Volunteer driver programs — Community organizations match seniors with volunteer drivers for flexible, door-to-door trips, often at no charge or low cost.
  • Reduced-fare transit — Michigan seniors 65+ qualify for reduced fares on many public bus and transit systems.
  • Rideshare services — Apps like Uber and Lyft are increasingly used by seniors, and some Area Agencies on Aging offer assisted rideshare programs with support for those unfamiliar with the technology.
  • Private transportation companies — For-hire services specializing in senior transport, with vehicles equipped for wheelchairs, walkers, and other mobility aids.

Non-emergency medical transport and insurance

NEMT is a Medicaid-covered benefit in Michigan for eligible enrollees who have no other means of transportation to a covered medical service. Some Medicare Advantage plans also include transportation benefits — check your plan's Evidence of Coverage for details. For those paying out of pocket, rates vary by provider and distance.

Planning for the transition

If a senior is approaching the point where driving may no longer be safe, having a transportation plan in place before the change reduces stress and avoids missed appointments. Contact your local Area Agency on Aging to learn what programs are available in your county — many services have waitlists, so it's worth connecting early.
